Dear MSS Members,

  1. As pharmaceutical representatives how many times during the day or week do we give someone our company credit card or a personal check to cover a company expense? My guess is that most of us use our company credit card at least once a day. At our October meeting, Larry Nance, one of our MSS Board Members, shares his personal experience of Identity Theft and "How to protect yourself from Identity Theft.”
Topic: "How to protect yourself from identity theft"
Speaker: Larry Nance, MSS Board Member, Sanofi-Aventis Cardiovascular Specialty Rep.
    Date: Wednesday, October 12, 2005
    Time: 12:00 Noon - 1:30 PM
    Location: Prego's Ristorante, Hazard Center

  2. Time to renew your MSS membership for 2006 and recruit your pharmaceutical colleagues. You can download a membership application by logging onto our website www.medicalservicesociety.org and clicking on the membership tab.

  4. There are some important issues facing our industry that we can affect with our vote at the polls on November 8. There are two competing prescription drug access ballot initiatives in California that both aim to provide assistance to low-income patients.

PhRMA supports Proposition 78 Cal Rx, which would establish a market-based drug discount program in which manufacturers would cooperate with the State of California to offer deep discounts to families with incomes up to $58,000 annually. This is good public policy that will provide real help for low-income uninsured Californians.

PhRMA opposes Proposition 79, which could remove a manufacturer’s drugs from the California Medi-Cal program if the company does not agree to offer new state mandated prices to families who make up to $77,000 per year. This could potentially deny or restrict access to medications to the poor, aged, blind and disabled patients that depend on Medi-Cal. It would also require approval of the federal government, and no administration has ever approved a program of this kind. You can find more information about both of these initiatives by visiting www.calrxnow.org.

I would like to ask all of the MSS members to take a moment to visit the website www.calrxnow.org. You will see the position that PhRMA takes on both of these propositions. You will also see a link you can click on to view a list of organizations that have signed up to support 78 and a list of organizations that have signed up to oppose 79. It is important that we thoroughly understand the issues on the upcoming ballot, so that we can all make an informed decision when going to the polls.

Sincerely,
Tom Spetter
